When Do You Need a Physical Therapist?

Freedom of Choice
While some states require a referral from a physician before you can receive physical therapy, RI does not require a physician referral (however, your insurance plan may require it). You always have the freedom to choose your own physical therapist. Although a physician may refer you to a physical therapy facility in which the physician has a financial interest, you are entitled to seek treatment from the physical therapist of your choice.

The following list contains some of the most common reasons to see a physical therapist:

Back conditions
Knee problems
Shoulder/arm conditions
Neck conditions
Sprains and muscle strains
Ankle/foot problems
Carpal tunnel syndrome, hand/wrist problems
Hip fracture
Post-surgical rehabilitation
Rehabilitation after a serious injury (eg, broken bones, head injury)
Stroke rehabilitation
Problems with balance
Disabilities in newborns
Burn rehabilitation
Pre-/post-natal programs
Incontinence
