President's Message
Message from the President of RIAPTA:
This is an exciting time to be a member of the APTA! RIAPTA held the Annual Meeting November 14, 2009 in Warwick, and is planning a student assembly in March 2010 as well as continuing education courses for 2010.
Many important items are occurring on a national level. Updates provided by APTA to components include:
(1) APTA partnered with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA) and the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT) to host the first annual International Policy Summit on Direct Access and Advanced Scope of Practice in Physical Therapy on October 22-24 in National Harbor, MD. The goal of this summit was to advance the practice of physical therapy by exploring the current status of different nations and the emerging policies on direct access. The summit provides an opportunity to learn the latest research supporting these policy initiatives and to share strategies for implementing policy at the local, regional and national levels.
(2) All APTA members were e-mailed the 2009 Membership Survey. The survey is part of the data collection effort being conducted to assist with the annual strategic plan review and membership recruitment and retention efforts. This is an opportunity for members to provide feedback on APTA's strategic initiatives, benefits, products, and services.
(3) The Payment Policy & Advocacy Department will held the 2009 Reimbursement Chair Meeting November 20-21, Arlington, VA for Component Reimbursement Chairpersons. This event was intended to provide an update on important reimbursement trends, provide an opportunity for networking, and offer strategies for dealing with third party payers. The RIAPTA reimbursement chair position is currently vacant. Contact tamara@leahymg.com if interested.
(4) Information on dues waiver from APTA component update: "APTA Board recently adjusted the policy on waiver of dues in light of the current economic environment. Waiver requests may be related to, but not limited to, losses due to natural disasters, substantial loss of total household income due to reasons outside of the member's control, as well as serious illness, or the death/incapacitation of a family member. Member requests will be handled in consultation with the appropriate Chapter President. A waiver will cover one year of membership only and will include both national and chapter dues. Questions can be directed to Agatha Johnson, Director of Member Services at agathajohnson@apta.org. "
(5) Visit the Learning Center at apta.org to earn free CEUs for members through online completion of learning modules on ethics, professionalism, neuroimaging, health care reform, translating evidence to practice.
