How long does it take to graduate with a degree in physical therapy?
Doctoral study in most programs covers an additional 3 years of rigorous graduate study following the undergraduate 4 year degree. In some cases, accelerated undergraduate work may lead to early admission to the graduate program, in which the first year of the PT program serves to complete the undergraduate degree, thus allowing for a 3 + 3 year plan, rather than the usual 4 + 3 plan.
3 Years as a DPT Student
Once in the graduate program, the first two years prepares the doctoral candidate in basic and clinical sciences, as well as in professional issues which the future clinician will need as a healthcare decision-maker. During graduate study, at least 30 weeks of the curriculum involves internship clinical experience following classroom and lab preparation.
What are the licensing requirements for physical therapists?
After graduating from an accredited physical therapy program, you must then pass the National Physical Therapist Examination (NPTE) administered by the state licensing board. Upon passing the exam you will need to meet any additional requirements your state licensing board may have before they will allow you to practice.
After the DPT? Board Certification in Specialty Practice
Some physical therapists seek advanced certification in a clinical specialty, such as orthopedic, neurologic, cardiopulmonary, pediatric, geriatric, or sports physical therapy, after they complete several years of clinical practice. Others are certified in electrophysiological testing and measurement.
Who accredits physical therapy schools?
Physical therapy education programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), which assures quality in physical therapy education. Accreditation status signifies that the program meets established and nationally accepted standards of scope, quality, and relevance.
